Address

55509 311th Avenue Ct E, Ashford, WA 98304

Getting here

From Seattle: I-5 S → WA-512 E → WA-7 S → WA-706 E toward the park. Ashford Valley Grocery & Gas is 1 mile from the property if you need to top off. The house is at the end of the cul-de-sac — you can't miss it.

What to pack

  • Rain jacket — even in summer, the mountain makes its own weather
  • Hiking boots with ankle support (trails can be wet and rooted)
  • Layers — mornings and evenings near the park are 15–20°F cooler than Seattle
  • Sunscreen — the snowfields above 5,000 ft reflect hard
  • Bug spray (May–September)
  • Reusable water bottles — there are water stations at the park visitor centers
  • Cash — Copper Creek and a few local spots are cash-preferred
  • Offline maps downloaded in case of spotty park service inside Mt. Rainier

Grocery stops on the way

Safeway — Eatonville

Full selection, pharmacy. 28 mi north on WA-7.

Ashford Valley Grocery & Gas is 1 mile from the property — great for last-minute snacks, drinks, and a top-off.

If you're arriving after 9 PM, text Julia with your ETA — she'll make sure everything is ready for you.

Visiting November–March? The driveway is plowed after significant snowfall, but WA-706 can require chains past Ashford. Check WSDOT road conditions (wsdot.wa.gov) before leaving and pack traction devices. The park's Nisqually entrance stays open year-round, but Paradise Road typically closes November–May.

Check-in steps

Parking

Park in the driveway. Please avoid blocking the road, mailbox access, or neighboring driveways. In winter, snow and ice can make the driveway slippery — chains or AWD may be necessary.

Towels are in the hall closet. Hot tub towels (designated) are in the wicker basket by the back door.

Cell service is spotty inside the park — plan accordingly.

Bedrooms

Upstairs loft: king bed. Downstairs bedroom: queen bed.

Thermostat

The thermostat is on the living room wall near the washer and dryer closet — controls both heat and AC throughout the home. I recommend 72°F for year-round comfort. When running AC, keep windows and exterior doors closed.

Fireplace

There's a working fireplace with a simple on/off switch on the right side of the unit. The exterior gets hot while in use — don't touch the surface. Turn it off before leaving the house or heading to bed.

Hot Tub

The hot tub is preset to 101°F. To adjust the temperature, press the Temp button once — the screen will blink with the current setting. Press Temp again to raise or lower it. If it starts going the wrong direction, let the screen stop blinking, then press again — it will switch directions. Two sets of jets can be turned on independently. To change the light color, press the Light button and cycle through. Always replace the cover and secure the latches after use. Shower before getting in — no bath bombs, oils, or glass near the tub.

Fire Pit

Firewood is stacked outside — complimentary, while supplies last. Kindling is in the shed. Use the fire pit only — never burn during red/orange Washington burn restriction days (check pscleanair.gov and piercecountywa.gov/982/Outdoor-Burning).

EV Charger

Level 2 J1772 charger (Grizzl-E) just to the left of the front deck. Adds 20–30 miles of range per hour. Simply plug in — no codes or payment needed. Charging is complimentary. Tesla drivers: bring your J1772 adapter. Please unplug and replace the cord neatly when done.

Kitchen

Four-burner gas stove with a gas oven. To light: turn the knob to the 'light' position until you hear a click and the burner ignites. If it doesn't catch right away, turn it off, wait 10 seconds, and try again. Range hood: press the clock icon on the left to activate, select fan speed 1–5, press the light icon on the right for the hood light. Avoid putting downward pressure on the range hood — it's fragile.

Coffee

Keurig coffee maker with a selection of K-Cups provided. Feel free to bring your own favorites if you have a preference I might not stock.

Dishwasher

Detergent pods are provided. Place a pod in the flip-box container on the inside of the door, close the door, select your wash setting (clearly labeled), and press Start.

TV

Two Roku Smart TVs, both set to Guest Mode. When prompted, select your checkout date to access the control panel. Log in with your own credentials for Netflix, Hulu, Disney+, and more. Cable TV is not provided.

String Lights

String lights hang from the cabin and across the backyard. They're on a timer (dusk to 11 PM) and also have a manual switch inside to the right of the sliding door to the deck.

Ceiling Fans

Each fan is operated using the wall-mounted remote located next to the light switches at the top of the stairs. Please don't remove the remote from its holder — the fans will function while the remote remains in place.

Washer & Dryer

In the utility room next to the kitchen. Detergent is provided — feel free to help yourself. Choose your program, place detergent in the tray, close the door, and press Start. Simple instructions are posted next to the machines if you're unsure about any settings.

Trash & Recycling

Bins are at the end of the driveway.

Board Games & Cards

In the cabinet under the TV — Catan, Ticket to Ride, Codenames, a standard deck, and a few others. Help yourself.

S'mores Kit

Marshmallows, chocolate bars, and graham crackers are on the top pantry shelf, ready for the fire pit. Roasting sticks are in the wicker basket by the back door alongside the hot tub towels.

House rules

  • Maximum 4 guests
  • No pets
  • Quiet after 10 PM — keep voices and music down, but feel free to enjoy the deck and hot tub
  • Check pscleanair.gov and piercecountywa.gov/982/Outdoor-Burning before lighting the fire pit — no burning during active burn bans
  • Quick shower before the hot tub, and please keep glass away from the tub
  • Lock up when you head out — pull the front door firmly until you hear it latch

Nearest hospital: Arbor Health Morton Hospital — 521 Adams Ave, Morton, WA · (360) 496-5112 — approximately 24 miles away.

Power Outage

Echo House has a Kohler whole-home automatic generator. If the power goes out, the generator kicks on by itself and everything continues running normally — there's nothing you need to do.

WiFi Down

First try toggling WiFi off and on on your device. If that doesn't help, unplug the router for 10 seconds, then plug back in and allow a couple of minutes to reconnect. If Starlink itself is down, it should recover automatically. Message Julia if issues persist.

Tripped Breaker

The electrical panel is in the downstairs bedroom, hidden behind the wall decoration above the bed. Lift or move the decor to access it. All breakers should be firmly in the center (ON) position. If one appears out of place, flip it fully off, then back to center to reset.

Septic / Toilets

The home is on a septic system — please only flush toilet paper, and in small amounts. Nothing else down the toilets. A plunger is located to the left of each toilet if needed.

Hot Tub Error

Error codes are displayed on the topside control panel. FLO error = check water level (add via garden hose). OH error = water too hot, lift cover and let cool. All codes explained on the laminated card attached to the inside of the hot tub cabinet.

Weather

Mt. Rainier creates its own micro-weather. Even in July, conditions above 5,000 ft can change from sunny to whiteout within an hour. Always carry a rain shell on any hike above Paradise. Check weather.gov/sew for park forecasts.

Carbon Monoxide

CO detector is hardwired in the hallway. If it alarms: get everyone outside immediately, leave the door open, call 911 from a safe distance. Do not re-enter until cleared by emergency services.

If you only have 1 day

  • 7:00 AM — Coffee at Rise & Grind before the crowds hit
  • 8:00 AM — Drive to Paradise (45 min). Arrive early to get parking
  • 8:45 AM — Hike Skyline Loop (5.5 mi) or Comet Falls if you prefer waterfalls

If it rains

  • Grove of the Patriarchs trail (1.5 mi loop) — massive old-growth trees form a canopy that keeps you surprisingly dry
  • Drive the Carbon River Road — Rainier's temperate rainforest, gorgeous when wet
  • Back to Echo House: board games are in the cabinet under the TV, fireplace on, movies on the couch
  • Dinner at Paradise Village Restaurant — the pierogi and Ukrainian dishes are worth it on a slow evening

Hidden gems

  • Reflection Lakes at sunset (after 5pm) — you'll have it mostly to yourself and the light is extraordinary
  • Kautz Creek trailhead — five minutes from the house, almost no one uses it, excellent old-growth forest walk
  • Mt. Rainier Railroad & Logging Museum (Mineral) — genuinely fun, especially with kids, and run by a nonprofit
  • Goat Falls near Packwood — less traveled than park trails, payoff is worth the drive

Mt. Rainier sits 5 miles from Echo House. At 14,411 ft it's the most glaciated peak in the contiguous US — and one of the most accessible alpine environments in the country. The Nisqually entrance (the one you'll use) is on WA-706, 5 minutes from the driveway.

Arrive at Paradise before 8 AM on summer weekends. The parking lot fills completely by 10 AM and rangers turn cars away. Early arrival also means cooler temps and fewer people on trail.

Park entrance: $30/vehicle for 7 days, or $80 for an America the Beautiful annual pass. Fully cashless — no cash accepted at any entrance station.

Weather above 6,000 ft changes fast. What's sunny at the trailhead can be a whiteout at the snowfield within an hour. Always carry a rain shell, even in July.

  • The park is fully cashless — credit/debit and digital payments only at all entrance stations.
  • Cell service is spotty inside the park — plan accordingly.
  • The Sunrise visitor area (east side of the mountain) opens in late June and is less crowded than Paradise. Road typically open through mid-September.
  • Wildflower peak at Paradise is typically mid-July to early August — one of the most spectacular places in the Northwest if your trip overlaps.
  • Check trail conditions at wta.org for hiker-submitted trip reports, or nps.gov/mora/planyourvisit/conditions.htm for official alerts.
